June 15th Challenge

Troop 53 will be hosting an orienteering (map and compass) competition in Radburn ‘B’ Park on Monday, June 15th.

Fair Lawn Troop 60, Pack 45, and Wayne/Wyckoff Venture Crew 1204 to compete with us.

The event will consist of 10 stations, with teams of two scouts working together to find the stations as quickly as possible.**** CUB MUST BE WITH PARENT

The course will require moderate to advanced map and compass skills to complete, so please make sure to read the Boy Scout Handbook sections on map and compass thoroughly.

Teams will begin from the starting area, which will be on Howard Avenue in Fair Lawn between Radburn School and the playground.  Please park either on Howard, or around the corner.  Please DO NOT park on the grass, or on the gravel in front of the starting area.

Please arrive at 6:00 PM, for a 6:30 start.  Teams of 2 will be self-selected in advance.  Because there will be likely be far more scout teams than stations, we will be having a staggered start, so feel free to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit until your teams start time is called.

Parents: please respond to lashiksagoddess@gmail.com with the names of the cub and parent team who will participate, as well as your team name.

Items to bring:
Class ‘A’ Uniform
Hiking boots
Flashlight/Headlamp
Bug Spray
Orienteering Compass (one per team).  Military compasses are allowed by are discouraged, as they are much more difficult to use for this purpose.
[Orienteering compasses look like this (http://jedihorsemanship.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/orienteering_compass.jpg). Surveying compasses will not be acceptable.]

* The map will be supplied at the start of the competition.
